We are pleased to share that Clean Express Auto Wash has withdrawn its application for a proposed car wash in Shaker Square's Historic District.
This outcome reflects the power of community engagement. Residents, property owners, neighborhood organizations, preservation advocates, and public officials spoke with one clear voice in support of a different vision for Shaker Square—one that honors its historic character, walkability, transit connections, and vibrant mixed-use future.
More than 150 written comments and phone calls were submitted to Cleveland's Landmarks Commission expressing opposition to the proposal. Community members made it clear that this prominent site should support the ongoing renewal of Shaker Square and strengthen, rather than diminish, the qualities that make our neighborhood unique.
We are grateful to everyone who took the time to write a letter, make a phone call, attend a meeting, share information with neighbors, or otherwise make their voice heard.
Just as important, we are encouraged by commitments from city leaders to work with stakeholders toward identifying the right kind of development for this site—development that complements the revitalization of Shaker Square and the surrounding apartment corridor.
